1961 Warren High School Basketball, (Class of 2018), (Current Era Team)

Warren High School has a storied athletic history. Baseball dominated the early years. By the early 1960’s, football started to dominate as Pat Abbruzzi took over the job of head coach. Despite all the great athletes that went through WHS, Warren could only manage 1 basketball championship between 1920 and 1960 that being the 1929 team. Finally, during the 1960-61 basketball season, Coaches Tom Duffy and Nick Cariglia* broke the drought. With a solid starting team of Ted “T” Almada, co-captain Norm O’Brien, co-captain John McMahon,  Don “Duck” Ramsden*, and sometime they always seemed to lack-a solid big man in center-which they found in Rick Bettencourt, the Warren hoopsters dominated Class C. Their only blemish was 2 losses to Barrington but those came after the Warren 5 had captured the Class C title. The team lost in the quarter finals of the state tournament to Class A Rogers High (This was before there were class state titles so class C had to beat class A in order to advance). Other team members who contributed to the Class C Championship were; Ken Abbruzzi*, Charlie Andrade, Oscar Charette, Al “Tubby” Jamiel, Del Martin*, Dave Dallaire, and manager, Nick Ramos.
