SUSAN M. CARLSON (Coach, Class of 2017)

In 1987 four public school teachers, special educator Sue Carlson, recently elected Rhode Island State Representative Sue Donovan, Hall of Fame committee member Diane Gempp, and Hall of Famer Wanda Lukas, responded to parental requests and formed a Special Olympics program for Warren and Bristol students.

Thirty years later Sue Carlson continues to actively coach the Bristol-Warren Special Olympics team.  Among the highlights of her special education coaching career are:

                            (1) leading two Unified Basketball teams to divisional championships in the late 1990s;

                            (2) coaching six Rhode Island track athletes at the 1999 Special Olympics World Games;

                            (3) being named the Rhode Island Special Olympics Co-Coach of the Year in 1999.

In her “spare time,” Sue coaches Cross Country, Indoor Track and Field, and Outdoor Track and Field at Lincoln High School and volunteers as the Director of Girls Cross Country for the Rhode Island Track Coaches Association.  And for more than twenty years she has served as a swim official for United States Swimming and/or the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

She has led teams to multiple state and divisional Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field championships.  Six of her mentees, including two of her three children, have been named Rhode Island All State.
