SHEILA MURPHY BUCKLEY (Athlete, Class of 2018)

As the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame enters its 20th year there are some inevitable threads that run through the years. If you look through the archives for the individual inductees, you’ll notice that some names are repetitive. Abbruzzi, Jamiel, Barry, Correia, Sampson, along with a few others, all have multiple family members who are also Hall of Fame members. The “Running Murphy’s” add a 3rd member to the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame. Sheila Murphy Buckley joins her brothers Neil and John-both Hall of Fame runners, as a member of the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame.

With her father and brother John as inspiration, Sheila attended the Lincoln School where she received varsity letters in gymnastics, track and cross country. Running Cross Country like the rest of the family, she began to excel at the sport. In 1975 Sheila was named All State and All Eastern Division in Cross Country. In 1975 her brother John was also named All State in Cross Country. This may be the only time that brother and sister were named All State in the same year for the same sport. In 1987, brother Neil joined them as All State, making 3 siblings All State in the same sport. She moved on to college where she tried a new sport and lettered in Lacrosse. She returned to running and lettered in both track and X-country. She co-captained her college Cross Country team in her senior year.
