MATT URBAN (Athlete, Class of 2017)

Like many of Warren’s top athletes, Matt got his start in Warren’s youth sports programs. Playing for the Pop Warner Warren/Swansea Junior Midgets in 2000, he ran back the opening kickoff for a team that would win the State and Northeast Championships. Moving up to the Midgets in 2001, he helped lead that team to repeat as State and Northeast Champions for the 2001 season.

Playing hockey in Division B of the Rhode Island Developmental League, Matt help lead the Bristol/ Warren Junior Huskies to a playoff championship, scoring 4 goals in a semifinal win in 2001.  Matt’s 2002 Junior Huskies were Season Champions and Playoff runners up.

His Mt Hope gridiron team was a Super Bowl finalist in 2004. In 2005 Matt would be named 1st Team All State as a wide receiver, giving him All State accolades at 2 different positions. He was also an All Division 3 Running Back in the same year he was named All State at Wide Receiver-no small accomplishment.

He went on to URI, where he was a 4 time letterman, with 5 career interceptions as a defensive back. Each year, the RI chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame selects the top 12 senior student athletes from the state’s high school football teams. In 2005 they named Matt Urban as one of the 12 scholar-athletes for excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.
